Going Back to Basics

The last couple of weeks have been emotional and intense.

Everything that's been going on in the world is a wake up call. I have faith that this is a grand awakening. We're all a part of it. All of us need to stand up to oppression where ever and whenever we witness it around us. Supporting Black Lives Matter and other organizations that are working on raising awareness and advocating for system change is something we all need to support.

As I've marched, spoken to my black friends, witnessed and heard their pain I've started to think about how important it is to build a strong foundation of health in order to support others.

The ability to hold space for others, to hear the pain in their voices, share in their heart break requires that we ourselves are of strong mind and body. In this blog I want to share my top tips for how to boost your own health so that you're able to help others.

Remember when we used to be able to fly? I remember those days. Before...

How Do We Move Forward?

Have you been feeling heavy the last few days?

Me too. I've been emotionally drained. But I know that my emotions are nothing compared to what those in the black community are experiencing. I've been speaking to my friends and listening to their pain.

This week I'd like to share some information that I hope helps.  “Injustice for one is injustice for all.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Here are eight ways that you can fight racism in your community:

1. Learn to recognize and understand your own privilege.

One of the first steps to eliminating racial discrimination is learning to recognize and understand your own privilege. Racial privilege plays out across social, political, economic, and cultural environments. Checking your privilege and using your privilege to dismantle systemic racism are two ways to begin this complex process.

However, race is only one aspect of privilege. Religion, gender, sexuality, ability-status, socio-economic status, language, and...

The Healing Power of Forgiveness

Someone ever hurt you so bad you wanted them to burn in hell?

Is it just me? Didn't think so. People do some pretty shitty things.

I didn't realize it but for many years I carried around the shitty things that had been done to me like a badge of honour. This person did this, someone else did that. My feelings were hurt, lines were crossed, it wasn't fair.

I'd have long internal conversations with myself about how I had been wronged. It was wrong and people suck sometimes. I wanted to cocoon myself and never come out.

Then I started to do some spiritual work. The very first book I read about this kind of 'spiritual stuff' was Gary Zukov's 'The Seat of the Soul.' A light went on for me. I realized that if I wanted to change my experiences I had to start to embrace forgiveness. I had to let go of anger.

Wanting to do something and actually doing it are two different things. I took baby steps in self evolution. I practiced forgiveness here and there. Then I went to do my...

How Can Mama Earth Help You? The Simple But Powerful Benefits of Grounding

You're on edge, stressed, anxious.

I get it. These are the strangest of strange times. I had moments in the early weeks where I straight up wanted to scream. Moments of complete anxiety and overwhelm. Days that were far from productive, where I was spinning my wheels.

I didn't make myself feel bad though. I reminded myself that none of us have a guide book right now. We're simply doing our best.

I went back to a practice I learned from a healer several years ago, at a time when I had days where I felt like coming out of my skin.

This simple but powerful practice helped me move through a very difficult period in my life. There are several ways to ground but I'll share the one that I practiced at the time.

The theory behind grounding is that it affects the living matrix, which is the central connector between living cells. It uses the electrical charges from the earth to affect health. Electrical conductivity exists within the matrix that functions as an immune...

Two Questions to Ask to Gain Clarity During Uncertain Times

Have you ever ugly cried? The kind of crying where there are tears streaming down your face, and snot running into your mouth because you're crying so much. UGLY crying.

The last time I ugly cried I was truly brought to my knees. I remember where I was in my kitchen ugly crying. It was early days after my husband had passed away suddenly from a heart attack. I was still in a state of shock and unable to manage my emotions from moment to moment.

There I was curled up into a ball on the kitchen floor completely distraught. No one was with me. I felt completely alone. Somehow out of the ether two questions floated through my mind.

How is this helping me?  What's next?

These two very simple and basic questions became the foundation on which I built my new life. It's very humbling to be in a completely broken state and ask how is this helping me? When we're in an emotionally fragile state our ego doesn't want to look inwards.

But being at your most raw and...

Detoxification? What Does it Do?

You're frustrated and at your wits end.

You've been doing your best to improve your health. You're eating better, moving more. Yet you're still struggling with your health. Some days you feel desperate.

You miss the person you used to be.

I've been there. When I was at the worst with hypothyroidism I would take two steps forward, and what felt like five steps back. Yes I was making strides with my nutrition but there was a vital element I was missing. My health struggles are what led me to study nutrition and get certified. The past few months I've been doing a deeper dive into the importance of-

I didn't appreciate how much my body needed to detoxify on a deeper level. Over time toxins build up in our body and they're connected to many chronic conditions, especially autoimmune conditions like hypothyroidism.

Unfortunately the environment we live in is highly toxic. We're exposed to so many toxins in the air we breathe, the water we drink, personal...

The Healing Power of Liquid Nutrition

Are you familiar with liquid nutrition?

No, I'm not talking about tequila.

I'm talking about superfoods like chlorophyll, barley grass and wheatgrass and what they can do to bring high density nutrients into your body. There's a place in a healthy diet for liquid superfoods. When you drink liquid nutrition it goes straight to your cells rather than hanging out in your digestive system.

To be honest when I first heard of wheatgrass I turned my nose up at the idea of drinking it. This was in my early twenties and I didn't know much about nutrition.

Ignorance is bliss they say. Had I taken the time to actually learn I would've understood the power of chlorophyll and various grasses to heal the body from the inside out.

It was my own health crisis that set me on the path to learning about optimal nutrition. It has really given me a chance to open my eyes to the healing power of the body, when it's given the best nutrition possible. To create health it's important...

Cultivating Hope in Dark Times

When we first were told to practice social distancing and to stay home I was pretty easy going.

I thought three weeks and things will be back to 'normal.' But now a few weeks in I don't know when things will be 'normal' again or even what that will look like.

This time has forced me to double down on my spiritual practice as a way of keeping my own sanity and helping others.

I want to share with you some tools that can help you cultivate hope.

If you haven't already start a daily gratitude practice this is great time to start. Too often people are waiting for everything to be perfect in their life before they express gratitude. But if you start to come into a state of gratitude first, allow yourself to feel grateful, you'll manage to do two very important things.

There's science that shows that those who practice gratitude for ten minutes three times a day actually have a 50% increase in their immune system after just four days! Wow! That's truly amazing.

How Optimal Gut Health Can Protect Against COVID-19

What's the gut got to do with it?

All disease begins in your gut. Unfortunately the standard Western diet does a number on your gut health. Compromised gut health affects your immune health. Change your diet, change your gut microbiome.

Poor immune health makes your susceptible not only for COVID-19 but also to any other viruses or bugs that might be floating around.

Along with poor diet choices there are also chemicals in your food that makes having a healthy gut next to impossible. One of the worst chemicals in the food system is glyphosate.

The word is pronounced Gly-PHO-Sate.

What exactly is glyphosate and why should you care? Glyphosate is a water soluble toxin that can be found in the herbicide Roundup. It's used mostly in farming and sprayed onto crops like oats, corn, soy and many others. Due to the fact that it is water soluble, it has the ability to travel anywhere in the environment. Since we live on a planet that's made up of mostly water, glyphosate...

How Can a Routine Help You?

Brian Tracy says, “Good habits are hard to form but easy to live with. Bad habits are easy to form but hard to live with.”

It can be very tempting to go into panic mode. It's completely understandable. The daily news isn't helping and nor is social media. We're all facing something we've never faced in our lifetimes.

There are ways to help yourself get through the days with a little more ease. There's nothing wrong with wanting to feel a little bit better, despite what's going on right now.

Creating a daily routine for yourself will do wonders for your mood and overall wellbeing. Some of the downsides to no routine are poor sleep, poor nutrition choices, and increased stress levels.

Here are some of the benefits of a routine-

Lowered stress levels that improve mental health. A lack of healthy stress management techniques can put you at greater risk for heart disease and negatively impact your overall health.

Better sleep will help your body recover from the...
