5 Proven Ways to Quit Sugar and Start Feeling Better

Did you know the average person consumes 22 teaspoons of sugar a day? That’s more than 3 times the recommended daily amount… and a triple scoop of YIKES!

And you’ve probably heard it before that sugar consumption is connected to some not-so-sweet things like obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, chronic inflammation, heart disease and more.

But did you also know that sugar is more addictive than cocaine?

True.

So how do we kick the habit?

I’m here to tell you there is hope and I’ll give you the how-to in a minute.

IT IS possible to give up sugar and still love life.

As party season gears up, you might be fretting about your clothes getting all the more tighter.

Nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable when you’re trying to enjoy yourself.

WTF HAPPENED?!

You used to be able to eat anything and look great.

Now just looking at cookies around the office makes you feel heavy and gross.

But there’s more to it than carrying excess weight around your middle, isn’t there?

Maybe you can’t get a good night’s sleep, or your energy is like a yo-yo all day long as you move in and out of a brain fog.

Maybe it takes three cups of coffee for you to feel “normal”.

Maybe you’ve even been avoiding getting intimate with your partner.

STOP THE SPIRAL!

Here are 5 easy ways to start living that sugar-free life:

  • READ LABELS. Sugar isn’t necessarily called sugar on the label. It has many different names. Get ready… There are 64 different names for sugar! Some of the most common ones are cane sugar, brown sugar, high fructose corn syrup, beet sugar, maple syrup, agave syrup, rice syrup and, obviously, many more. Read your labels! Beware of any ingredient with an “-ose” in the name. It’s generally a sugar. Some examples are frustose, lactose, glucose, and sucrose.

  • SKIP SIMPLE CARBS. Simple carbs include white rice, white pasta, white bread. These have been stripped of their micronutrients and have very little nutritional value. Best to stick to whole nutrient rich grains. I love Rizopia's Organic Brown Rice Pasta and it’s gluten-free too!

  • AVOID ALL ARTIFICIAL SUGARS - including stevia. Artificial sugars trick your body into thinking you’re actually having sugar. This can actually make sugar cravings worse. Plus Splenda, Equal and NutraSweet have chemicals in them like aspartame, sucralose, and  saccharin which definitely aren’t good for your health -- they’re all linked to cancer.

  • ELIMINATE DRINKS WITH ADDED SUGAR. Some people are great at avoiding sugary foods, but end up drinking all their calories in the form of lattes, fruit juices and soda. Drink more water and stick to unsweetened herbal teas.

  • FOCUS ON WHOLE FOODS. Whole foods are made from nature and don’t contain the added sugars, chemicals and preservatives of processed foods. The more you can stick to whole foods the easier it’ll be to avoid sugar because your tastebuds will actually change and the usual cravings for something sweet will stop.

“Bye Bye Sugar really surprised me. I had been working out two or three times a week for three months, hoping to shed a few pounds. I was monitoring my weight and seeing no change. After the first week in Bye Bye Sugar, I was down 8 pounds! I felt better and had more energy.” - Ian

“After the first three days on the program I started to settle into a routine, and after about 7 days I started to see some remarkable differences. I woke up feeling better... the typical aches in my lower back had reduced… I woke up more alert. In addition, I noticed how much better I was able to manage stress through a difficult year end/holiday season as I was more patient and articulate. I also noticed my clothes began to feel more comfortable, my cravings subsided, and overall self-confidence increased. All thanks to giving up sugar!” - Denise
